London: busy, busier, most busy
As quite as it can be in Zonhoven, as oppositely noisy it might be in London. Sleeping at the street side with open windows, forced due to the heat in the room, you might experience it properly. Busses seem to drive all around the night, as well as taxi’s. Even the people have a good time during the night. But as long as you keep yourself so busy during the day that you are totally exhausted when you want to sleep, you will not have any problems
I love R, do you?
For my master thesis, the main pogram used is the free software R. R is described by the CRAN-site as ‘R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS.’ Which highlights immediately one of the major advantages of R: It allows for flexible adaptations of graphics in the way preferred by the programmer.
However, as you can have installed R, help on programming and certain codes might be necessary, many options with that respect are availabe:
Goodbye Vancouver, back in Belgium
And a similar title for a blog post once again. The last days of Vancouver past by quickly by following presentations and having nice evenings with lots of joy and laughing again
The presentations concerning infectious disease where mainly scheduled nearly the end of the conference. As such I had the opportunity to hear a presentation from Niels Becker, who presented nicely!
Vancouver, excitement everywhere
Yes indeed, going to my first congres sounds really professional and I can tell you I already learned many things. Of course related to the conference itself, such as the presentations I visited, but also how to work on a conference (on my Master Thesis) but these are maybe not of much interest because the more interesting parts are the ones worth writing about.
Vancouver, the world of conference
After a long flight of 9 hours followed by a turning back of our watches, we arrived in Vancouver only 15 minutes after leaving Amsterdam, isn’t that cool?
Apperantly if you arrive after a long flight (with 2 meals) it is important for some people to have a decent meal before going to sleep. But well, we arrived safely so we could enjoy, although feeling tired near the end.
Goodbye London, Hello Vancouver
Yes indeed, a lot of goodbye in a short period of time, but with a lot of new experiences
Today was my last day (at least for two weeks) in London, working at LSHTM. The last couple of days has been a lot of programming, running codes and much of thinking on how to program. So actually the real stuff at last
But as you might become totally grumpy when codes do not run properly or they take their precious time, just go outside from the work and walk to the Brittish Museum. It is an amazing building and if you just walk all the way through follow ‘Great Court’ you will come to something very nice, well it is a little difficult to explain but some small idea I can give you by my pictures and I would advice you to just go and visit
Being flexible
The past few days have been a lot of matter of being flexible, but off course some relaxation as well. First the good news, an additional item for your to-do-list when you ever visit Londen! Going for a really Brittish Sunday afternoon, one of the places to enjoy this is by going to Regent’s Park where you can watch Cricket and enjoy the families around with small kids, the youth enjoying themselves by playing football, Cricket, Baseball, … A lovely place as well, check out on the pictures page!
Tourist for one day in London City
Before coming to London I was talking from different people, off course on how London could be but also of what I will do here, my master thesis. Sometimes there were this jokes like “oh that means that if you come back and we ask what did you see from London or we ask for the Big Ben and you say ‘Huh, never heard or seen the Big Ben…’” Well, I could already say you after my first day here that I would know the Big Ben, but today my knowledge of the city is even more improved (as one of our guides said
). We have been going around London by the Hop-on-hop-off tourist bus, which stops at different places, makes tours off course (many different with different things to see) but the good thing is that if you want to explore certain areas more, you just go off on the stop and walk around. Sometime later you jump on the next bus.
As I wrote already a couple of days ago, yesterday we went to The Proms. After our working day we rushed to have some food and went to the tube. South Kensington was the station to be, after that a short walk followed and we arrived to the Royal Albert Hall, which is an amazingly nice big building! Nice to see, we didn’t take pictures of it, but I will try to make sure later on to go and take some of them so you have the idea of it
Statistical: Data Comparison
In various settings, datasets have to be compared. One such a situation happened during my Master Thesis, in which people were asked to fill in diaries about their contact behaviour on one specific day. Later on they were asked to fill in one diary again. In the first situation the participant was contaminated with H1N1v, while it was hoped that he or she was recovered in a later point in time.
